Cultural Communities and Home
A house is a structure while a home is in my heart. I have a house to give me shelter, but home is so much more than that. At home I feel safe. My family makes me feel loved. Their love fills me with warmth like the flames in our fireplace. Everything that brings good memories and what makes me special is in my home. My home is a holy place where I pray. It is made out of love and kindness.
A home is a community, a place where people depend on each other. A community is where relationships are built. Communities are made of people who are trustworthy. My family is part of a big community. We bring our culture and identity as a community into our home. Our culture is found in our delicious meals which my family teaches me to make. These meals fill the air with the aroma of spicy jollof rice and tender fried turkey. My home is filled with words from many languages and I hear the wisdom of my parents in Yoruba, English, and French. Connecting with our culture makes my home special and beautiful. Michelle Obama once said, “What you bring into the home is what makes it a home.”
