We Are All United
When Li Na thinks of home, she thinks of her apartment
Small and cozy, it filled with happy memories and contentment
She smells the soothing scent of herbal tea
The scent of lavender and rosemary
She tastes her mother’s homemade sashimi
A recipe that has been passed down for a century
She watches soap operas with her grandmother
And teaches English to her younger brother
It may be difficult to adjust, in a country where she is unfamiliar with the main language,
But she knows that she’ll persevere,
In her new home,
In Calgary, Alberta
When Jean-Paul used to think of home, he used to think of France, his home country
He thought of Paris, the city of love and beauty
He thought of his grandfather’s bakery, where he used to help him bake croissants
He thought of the park, where he used to play all day in the Sun
Now Jean-Paul thinks of his new home in Windsor, Ontario
He thinks of the big hills in his backyard covered with snow
He thinks of his new school, where they stand up and sing 'O Canada’ every morning
It is beautiful, but he misses the familiar melody of "La Marseillaise"
The French national anthem
But he knows that he will adjust,
In his new home
In Windsor, Ontario
Li Na and Jean-Paul are vastly different,
Two unique and wonderful people
They are both immigrants, in a new country
Both insecure, unsure of their identity
Is a home where you live, or can it be elsewhere?
Is it anywhere where you receive love and care?
A home is more than a house,
Animals can have a home, even a mouse.
Be kind to others
Who may not be so lucky
Try your best to help them,
Let’s all live happily
