Home
Home is the place to go when you’re down
The place where you can snuggle up by the fireplace on frigid winter nights
A home is where loved ones are
Where your own comfy bed is
Where the smell of home cooked meals drift around the kitchen
A home is not a house
A house is a building
A place where you aren’t invited
A place that does not say “Welcome” when you open the door
Sometimes you take the feeling of being safe at night for granted
You forget what it would be like to not have a safe haven
You don’t remember people’s stories of shivering on cold Edmonton nights
If you have a home, you want to be there every day
You are happy to be a part of the community
You enjoy reading a book on the chair by the ugly fireplace
You are grateful for the feeling of being loved
My home is filled to the brim with laughter and joy
And the smells of my mom’s mouth watering stir fry
My dad’s hand made brownies
And the aroma of the popcorn that my mom put too much salt on
In the home where I live, the place where I belong
You can always hear the cheers of excited Oilers fans as McDavid scores the winning goal
The swoosh of the Canadian flag waving in the wind as the national anthem is proudly sung
The sound of my not so good piano practice
As my dog barks at the squirrel that’s not there
When I hear these sounds, I know I am home.
Some people aren’t as fortunate as me
They worry about the next day
They don’t have a safe place to go back to
I am lucky to have a home where l can feel secure and loved
I always have a safe and caring place to go back to
And I never have to worry about where I will sleep the next night
My home is a place where I want to be because it is always filled with love, comfort, laughter, and joy
This is my home
