Home is Where I Belong
Home is where I belong
By: Audrina from Williamsburg Public School in Grade 6
A home is more than just walls. It’s where I create memories that can last a lifetime. It’s where I'm automatically welcomed and my life feels complete.
My home is a place where I greet my parents after a hard day of work, seeing their faces and smiles when they arrive through the front door. I feel excited as I tell them about my day at school. There are cozy hugs and snuggles. We celebrate our differences no matter what.
My family gathers around our dinner table. My dad makes Jamaican food and the aroma fills the air. Everyone goes quiet and all you hear is chewing because of how delicious his home cooking really is. The secret ingredient is love.
At my house is where I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I don’t have to worry about things like a place to sleep at night. I have always felt safe and sound without panicking about not having shelter or a roof over my head. Where my sister and I always sing to our favourite music the second we get home from school so loud the whole neighbourhood could hear. In the house, we redecorated our burgundy walls to sage green and changed the shaggy carpet to gray-washed wood floors. This is my home and where I truly belong.
Home can be many different things: a shelter or a place to stay. I just know wherever I go my home is my family. That is why Habitat for Humanity is creating a safe space, a gathering place for families, and helping to create memories in homes. They are giving many different families a proper home to live in.
