The Feeling of Home

The Feeling of Home By: Sophia Karmali My home was once a big building. Empty were its halls. No conversation echoed from the rooms. An eyesore it was, all empty and quiet. The ghost house they called it. No family wanted to walk its halls. A ‘For Sale’ sign glued on the mailbox, and a phone number to call. People passed and laughed at the thought of someone living there. Some looked through its windows and turned their heads disgusted, By the rats that roamed its floors. Days passed and no one gave a thought to buying this very house. Finally, one day a car drove by and slammed on the brakes. The driver took out his phone and called the number on the sign. That driver was my dad. He took a tour of the house and announced What great possibility it had. As the months went by something changed in what I saw. As the house changed so did the way I looked at it, I don't mean it looked nicer but the more memories that I made in it, and the more it filled with people made me see a home, not a house. Now my home is still a big house, But not a ghost house. You can hear people talking in every room. The ‘For Sale’ sign replaced by a welcome mat. My room is filled with books and the walls covered in posters. The walls used to be bare, now they are bright and colourful. Things that we kept stored in boxes are now proudly on display. To me home will always be the feeling that I have somewhere I belong. Today I’m thankful that I live in a home not a house. I hope one day everyone has a home Where they feel they belong.
