The Place Where You Belong

Children sing and dance, Running homewards full of joy, Home for me is the third of five children, Hand-me-downs and room sharing. Negative vibes are bad, I push them away from my head, Think about school and A’s, A snowflake falls on my gloved hand, I close it into a fist and make a wish, I wish for my parents attention, I push the door open and step inside, Nobody talks to me, Everyone ignores me. I feel mad, Anger is growing inside me, Running upstairs I grab my violin case, I stuff some clothes and snacks inside, Hurrying outside nobody notices me, I feel happy and free as I walk towards the nearby pond, My favorite place here at last. Wind rustles the trees, Waves crashing on rocks, I watch as a flock of cardinals fly by, Sitting on the river bank I smile. Nighttime comes way too soon, The wind makes the trees look like scary monsters moving, The rocks scrape my back as I lie down, The owls' eyes looking like kidnappers, I am hungry, For I am out of snacks, I twist and turn all night long, It is scary here. The next morning I play my violin, The one and only thing that reminds me of home, I play my parent's favorite songs, Closing my eyes and imagine them here with me, Wearing big smiles and clapping, When I open my eyes I see them running towards me, Their faces tear-stained. Hugging them makes me wonder why I left home in the first place, Home may be good may be bad, It is different for all, But whatever it is, Wherever it is, It is full of people who love you, Where you are safe and sound, Where you belong.
