Laura & Minnie
Laura stared out of the stained-glass window. Sitting, her crimson locks in a bun and piercing green eyes staring at the rolling hills. Her family had once been wealthy, but her father had spent all their money. Firing all the staff did not stop their mounting debts. The small town she grew up in for ten long years was transforming before her eyes. The townspeople had once respected them, now they were like that annoying fly you can never get rid of. The family had suffered losses, so a lot had changed in a short time, like her friends now only playing with Sandy Burgen. She was spending the week living with her Aunt Lindsey, a painter who was looked down on, in a town called Brookston.
“Laura, to the car.”
Her mother’s steely tones rang out in clear frustration. No one likes to be stuck on family handouts. Sighing, she stood up and carried her roller bag to the SUV. She hurled it in the back and climbed in while they slowly drove off. She remembered rich memories with her parents in the mansion.
Laura sat on a swing in the park behind the house when the girl she had been watching, approached. The curly black hair, brown eyes and sparkly white teeth matched her name.
“Hi I’m Minnie! Would you like to play with me?”
“Yes.” Replied Laura curtly.
The two pretended that they were never abandon her, and that home was not the place where you were the richest or the prettiest. Home is where you could truly be you and you alone.
