Moments of Home

It was a beautiful day. I spent summer vacation at my grandma’s house with my sister. My grandma lives in the countryside. The sun was shining, and the air was fresh from yesterday’s drizzle. While my parents were away in another city, working hard to provide for us. With my grandma's love and care, I barely felt sad. My grandma's neighborhood was peaceful, a place where we could be ourselves and feel safe. Chasing chicks my grandma had raised and exploring the plants my grandma cultivated. One evening, grandma took us on a walk to digest after dinner. The sky was painted with hues of pink and orange, the sound of the loud cooing of chickens reminding everyone it's time to eat dinner, and the breeze of late August through my hair. We walked along the countryside, saying hi to the busy farmers and neighbors. We sang, my sister and I skipped along the hard gravel stone ground and told all kinds of stories. On our way back to grandma’s house, the sunset slowly turned into bright orange then purple and died into the night. I saw every house full of warm lights and laughter, which stood out in the lonely black sky and the peaceful sounds of the crickets chirping. Suddenly, I felt all full and cozy in my heart. Home means feeling belonged, surrounded by the people and the nature that I love.
