The Meaning of Home

Home (həʊm) The place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household. This is the technical definition of home. Many people agree with it. I agree with it too, but personally, I feel that home is much more than that. I feel that home isn’t just where you live, it’s where you learn, it’s where you grow, it’s where you feel like you could spend the rest of your life. I really like my home. It fits this description perfectly. I love that I feel like I can be myself and be “in my element” when I enter it every day after school. Home makes you feel calm and happy and altogether is a great place to be. I believe the best part about home, though, is that it supports you, through the highs, and the lows. Sometimes I feel like my home is in another place. For example, when I visited my family in Scotland last summer, I truly felt that I belonged there. I felt more “in my element” than I did when I was in Canada, and it was an amazing feeling. I was sad when I had to leave, but I reminded myself that I have an amazing life in Canada as well, and I felt much better. This trip really shaped my idea of home. If you were to ask someone what the meaning of “home” is, they might say that home is where you live. However, after that trip, I found that home isn’t really where you live. It’s where you feel like you belong. I feel like I belong in many places, at school, at home, in my family, so in a way, I have many homes.
