Journey to Home

One rosy dawn long ago Airport bustling with flights “All aboard” she calls Our suitcases rumbling along the gate My city was left behind in a flurry of footsteps Excited, my mind wandered As my hand relaxed, dreams invaded Our large plane landed In the same sky where I was born But now I walked on foreign plains Rather than gazing through apartment windows We found a house, apple tree swaying Filtered light of orange tinted sun Potatoes for dinner As it slowly became home 2 years later, house for sale Sofa loaded into a truck Goodbye my dear I’ll see you soon Roads snaking along Red River gone Along the highway, crossing provinces Two cars stumbled onwards Drowsy sun, lazy breeze If trees were stars Then this was their city We settled down Welcoming friends They said this neighbourhood was a fine place to be I made new friends Kind, funny, and understanding Good people everywhere Clay pots were filled With native soil Hopes were seeded And I watched as they grew I’d like to open a coffee shop Canadian by heart Put paint on a brush And streak it on canvas Pencil scrabbling, bound in paper Designs sketched, brought to life Jasmine fragrance Floated past me On clouds of summer The sky cotton candy But I could not think My old friends, would they miss me? If so, I would never know It was then that I realized I was already home Home is where your family is To support you Dreams to be fulfilled Memories to be preserved Losses can be remembered Everyone should have a home To become who they deserve to be
