Is Home Always Where the Heart Is?

There is a famous quote that says “Home is where the heart is.” I love this quote because it describes what home means to me. Home is a feeling, not just a physical place. That is why it means different things to different people. Three words I would use to describe what home means to me are memories, love, and safety. My home holds many memories - good, bad, funny, scary, frustrating and wonderful. When I think of them, even the more difficult ones, I am reminded of the lessons I learned and how I grew from them. I know I am loved no matter where I am, but for some reason, home makes me feel the strongest part of that love. My home provides shelter from harsh weather conditions. It makes me feel safe physically. More importantly, it makes me feel safe mentally. I feel a great sense of gratitude that I have a physical place to call home that makes me feel loved and happy. When I think of home, it makes my heart feel warm and content. Unfortunately, not everyone feels this way or has a safe place to keep their heart. There are many people that don’t have a place to call home that provides love, shelter and protection. I imagine they often feel scared, sad, and unloved. That is not fair or right. It is for this reason that I would like to suggest a new quote: “Anyone with a heart should have a place to feel at home.” When you feel at home, you feel loved, comfortable and safe in the place or situation you are in. My home is my safe place. I hope that one day, we live in a world where everyone knows what that feels like.
