House and Home

What is the difference between house and home? A house is the paper of a skeleton tome, A vacant pair of eyes missing the heart, A blank, white canvas longing for art. A home is the colourful leaves on a tree The grass that fills up a barren wasteland, The coral in a vast blue sea, The friend that grasps an outstretched hand. A house is the sunrise missing the light, A question mark to symbolise “might,” A home is a rainbow, filled with colour, Or an infant cuddled up with its mother. A home is a refuge, a place to stay As welcoming as waiting arms, As needed as a compass showing the way, As prized as a fairy’s magic charms. A house is a book waiting to be read, A home is hope in times of dread, A house is a trophy case that’s bare, A home is a dog soothing someone’s despair. A home is filled with a sense of belonging, Despite the darkened, shadowed world, A wave clearing your wistful longing, The wind that catches a sail unfurled. A house is the waiting for a test’s grade, The strong worker that goes unpaid, The hidden potential that’s always ignored, The waiting sheath that’s missing the sword. A home is the silky petals of a rose, The windows that let in the sun, The whistling as the wind blows, Or when you emerge as number one. What is the difference between house and home? A house is possibility, waiting in the gloam, A home is a star cutting shade like a knife, Where you feel accepted, showered with life.
