The Homeless People

Sitting in the hotel window
Watching, wondering at the big city
Watching the dark alleys,
Wondering what might be hiding in them,
Watching the shifting blackness,
As it starts to form shapes,
And then finally I can make it out.

First an old man, staggering and wrinkled,
Then a young girl and a woman,
Then a dirty, dreadlocked child,
And more, and more of these people.

Homeless people with nowhere to live.
Homeless people with nowhere to go.
Homeless people, flooding out of the shadows.
Watching the people silhouetted in the moonlight,
And thinking about their lives,
Thinking about all the people in this world
Who don’t have a home.
Too many people in this world
Who don’t have a home.

But with our help
We can give homes
To all these poor humans.
And maybe, just maybe,
For once in their lives,
They will have a home.
