My Hideaway

My Hideaway

That’s what my house is
A wonderful two-storey, brick, hand-built hideaway
I’m safe here
From snowstorms
From bullies
From the world
Where my only worry is the colour of my room
My hideaway has everything
Colossal cupboards that hold my favourite meals
Brobdingnagian bookshelves brimming with my favourite bestsellers
The sea-blue painted walls that hold my most treasured memories
The two big bedrooms on the first floor that keep my rowdy siblings safe
When I’m gone it’s the little things I miss
The fan with it’s big blades
Swishing noisily
The fireplace
It’s black coals staining the carpet
The front door
Screaming every time someone opens it
My younger brother’s dirt trails that lead to the wackiest places
My friends’ nail polish that stained the bathroom floor
My hideaway has no perfections
But my family made it our own kind of perfect
The once flawless hand-crafted walls
Have so many holes
So many flaws
Hold so many memories
Memories that make our house different
Than the one next door
Or down the street
Or in another country
We made this house ours
And I know all its secrets
And it knows mine
So I’m happy right where I am
Protected by this wonderful
Two-storey
Hand-built
Brick
Hideaway
